Why Gopashtami Is Kept at a Gaushala
Gopashtami is the one day in the year devoted entirely to the cow, and it is traditionally marked by bathing, decorating, worshipping and feeding her. Doing that in a Gaushala means the cows honoured are rescued and elderly animals rather than a borrowed calf.
The day also carries the whole herd through a better week. Festive meals, jaggery, fresh fodder and extra hands on site mean every cow, including the frailest, is fed and attended to more generously than usual.
