Shade is not a luxury for cattle. Heat stress reduces appetite, raises breathing rates and makes elderly animals ill, and a mature tree cools the ground beneath it far more effectively than a tin roof.
Trees also do quieter work. They hold soil, reduce dust in the sheds, provide fodder leaves from suitable species, and slowly turn a bare campus into a place where cows can stand outside comfortably for most of the day.
